Mars’ crater complex reveals layers of ice in stunning spacecraft photos

In fresh images based on data from the Mars Express spacecraft, ice and dust pile up on the surface of Mars like a pie.

The European Space Agency (ESA) mission reveals so-called “mantle deposits” of ice and dust in Utopia Planitia, a region about twice the size of Earth’s Sahara. Utopia is one of three major basins in Mars’ northern hemisphere and contains much ice. (The plane also happens to be the landing site of the Chinese Zhurong rover.)
