SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Just a day after recovering her Twitter account, Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) accused California Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) of being a “Communist orderly” after he said so had criticized the general use of the term as a swear word.
“The word ‘groomer’ is categorically an anti-LGBTQ hate word,” said Wiener, who is gay and represents San Francisco in the California Senate. tweeted. “It’s super homophobic/transphobic. It plays into the smear that LGBTQ people are pedophiles. It’s no different than calling someone af—-t. If you call someone a groomer, you are inciting violence against LGBTQ people.”
Wiener wrote the tweet Sunday after the shooting at a Colorado Springs gay nightclub that killed five and wounded 18.
Some far-right conservatives use the term groomer — which refers to adults who form relationships with children so they can abuse them — to refer to LGBTQ people in general and gay men in particular, trading on an old stereotype that LGBTQ people are more likely to practice Molesting children (which studies over the years have shown is not true, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center).
The shooting happened on the night the club was promoting a drag show, and some conservatives have increasingly linked the homophobic accusation to drag performers and transgender people, as KRON4 previously reported, particularly since the debate over the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act (decried by critics). like the “Don’t Say Gay” law) earlier this year.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has faced criticism even within her own party for anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic remarks, quoted Wiener on Twitter on Tuesday as saying: “Pass my Protect Children’s Innocence Act to prevent communist orderlies like this from using state government power, to seize power, taking children away from their parents so a for-profit medical industry can chop off the genitals of these deranged children before they are even old enough to vote.”
The Protect Children’s Innocence Act would make it a federal crime, punishable by up to 25 years in prison, for doctors to prescribe puberty blockers or testosterone therapy to minors “to alter a person’s body to conform to a gender different from theirs.” sex,” according to the Georgia Congressman’s Office. It also prohibits “all taxpayer-funded gender-affirming care,” her office says.
Wiener quoted Greene early Wednesday as saying her comments were a “pretty clever mix of McCarthy-Red batting and gay batting. For the record, their Protect Children’s Innocence Act comes damn close to banning trans people from existence. Oh & [Republican House leader] Kevin McCarthy will strengthen them again.”
Democratic state Rep. Matt Haney (San Francisco) chimed in, tweeting that Wiener was “the target of some of the most vicious, hateful, and violent homophobic attacks” and thanking him for “calling out homophobia and hatred.”
Wiener has, in fact, been subjected to death threats, in addition to statements belittling his sexual orientation and religious beliefs (the state senator is Jewish). As recently as September, a man was found guilty of making death threats to Wiener, and in June his home near Castro was searched by bomb-sniffing dogs.
