It feels like forever since Marcel wears the shell with shoes on feature film announced. Jenny Slate First announced in 2014 that she and Marcel The shell Co-creator Dean Fleischer-Camp was planning a film based on the three-part shorts that went viral on YouTube. Eight years later we finally have a trailer for it.
The A24 film will be shot as a mockumentary, just like the YouTube shorts, and it reintroduces Marcel. In the trailer, Marcel (Slate) explains Fleischer-Camp (who is acting as a “documentary”) that it takes “at least 20 shells to have a community”. But he hasn’t; Instead, he lives alone with his grandmother Nana Connie (Isabella Rossellini).
Marcel appears to be in the company of Nana Connie (they output watch their days 60 minutes) but he misses the other shells. “Sometimes my mind wanders… thinking, ‘What would my family think?’ Do you think they could be out there?” he asks.
Marcel decides – with encouragement from Nana Connie – that he embarks on an adventure to find his family. but First him tries to seek help online and hosts a live stream asking if anyone has any information about his lost loved ones. He eventually sets out and his quest manages to draw the attention of him 60 minutes Hostess Lesley Stahl, who ends up interviewing him.
In addition to Slate, Fleishcher-Camp and Rossellini, the film also features supporting roles from Rosa Salazar and Thomas Mann. As seen in the trailer, Conan O’Brien and Brian Williams also make guest appearances.
The feature film was written by Slate, Fleishman-Camp and Nick Paley and will be directed by Fleishman-Camp. It first premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in 2021 and also recently screened at SXSW. The cinema release is this summer on June 24th.
