There are also plans to name an alternate for Murtough, a role O’Boyle was tapped for.

O’Boyle, who is from Northern Ireland, currently works as Head of Elite Performance for the Merseyside Club, where he formulates programs and initiatives to improve fitness.

The Liverpool man has a diverse range of skills and has held various roles in sports science, fitness coaching and first-team coaching and worked at United’s academy in 2006 working with nine and ten year olds.

He then enjoyed working with Wrexham’s first team.

The task facing Murtough and whoever is appointed assistant director of football is huge, according to Darren Bent, who believes the club needs sweeping changes.

He told talkSPORT’s Drivetime: “The ones you keep are [David] de Gea, you keep Varane. They need a new right-back I think.

“I do not think so [Scott McTominay] is good enough, but it’s yours. Structurally? nope

“I think Fred is a weird guy because you have to say the last few weeks he’s been the one who’s been going, ‘You know what? I am in favor’. But I think if you try to start against him and build a successful team, maybe he has to go.

“You keep Sancho. Ronaldo has to go. [Edinson] Cavani has to go. [Martial] have to go.

“Rashford is the guy who, if the new manager is into him, there’s something in it. If he can get the best out of him, keep him because he’s young.

“[Pogba] will go anyway, he is released at the end of the season. If Manchester United have any ambitions [he should go].

“I love Pogba as a player, I really do, but Manchester United fans are tired of saying, ‘We’re waiting for that consistency’ so he would have to go.”

Meanwhile, Bent also said club captain Harry Maguire should be shown the door at Old Trafford, while Luke Shaw is someone they could potentially sell as well.

When asked how far Manchester United are from just contending for the Premier League title, the former striker replied: “Miles away.

“The other day I said five years, but maybe eight years.”
