Man Utd have slammed tools since Carabao Cup final win and should have been hammered at Newcastle, Rio Ferdinand slams

The MANCHESTER UNITED stars have “laid down tools” since winning the Carabao Cup and must start “strangling” each other, according to club legend Rio Ferdinand.

The Red Devils returned from international break with a clammy loss to top-four rivals Newcastle on Sunday.

It has left United out of Champions League spots despite a strong start to 2023 with just 11 games left.

Erik ten Hag’s men lost just one game in 15 before their trip to Wembley to defeat Newcastle in the League Cup final at the end of February.

Since then, the club’s shaky form has butchered them at Anfield, drawn against Southampton and clinched cup victories against West Ham and Fulham.

Former United defender Ferdinand, who won 14 trophies during his long stint at Old Trafford, has had enough.

He said on his YouTube channel Five: “It seems like they won the Carabao Cup and knocked down tools.

“They think they’ve done enough, that’s how it feels. You need to get out of this rut.

“Sunday’s performance. Seize the moment! It’s the moment, it’s the top 4. Seize the opportunity. Understand what’s there. What are the demands on you?

“Luke Shaw mentioned that they had a meeting after the game. They have to strangle each other, there has to be a bit of pressure and shoving, people in the face. So people understand that this is the serious end of the season.

“If David de Gea doesn’t play we’re in trouble, it’s probably five or six. I thought they were over it. I thought we erased the feel of the Brentford game. I hope it wins. don’t raise your head again.”

Unlike their rivals for the Top 4, United remain in other competitions and face an overload of their resources as the season draws to a close.

A two-legged Europa League quarter-final awaits ten Hag’s side against Sevilla as they prepare to face Spanish opponents for the fourth time in Europe this season.

They can also look forward to another trip to Wembley this month when they meet Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals.
