Man fatally shot after stabbing two Houston police officers

HOUSTON (AP) — A man was fatally shot Saturday after Houston police said he stabbed and injured two officers.

Officers were called at 8:41 a.m. to a home in southwest Houston where family members of the man had reported he was experiencing a mental health crisis, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said during a news conference.

Police tried to de-escalate the situation, but the man pulled out a knife and stabbed the two officers, Finner said.

One of the officers fatally shot the man.

One officer was stabbed in the jaw and neck while the other was injured in the chin, Finner said.

“Both will be fine,” he said. “When I spoke to both of our officers, they were concerned about the suspect’s family and the suspect. I ask … that we pray for the families.”

Officers are placed on administrative leave while the Harris County Police Department and District Attorney’s Office investigate the shooting.

The name of the man killed was not immediately released by authorities.

Finner said the man had a history of mental illness and police had been called to the home several times before.
