Early one morning in April, the remains of Orsolya Gaal, a mother of two living in NYC, were found by a man walking his dog in a park near where she lives with her husband and two children. Gaal had been stabbed more than 50 times and her body stuffed into her 13-year-old son’s hockey bag. A trail of blood led straight from the bag to her house. Investigators first questioned her son, but they would soon find out that Gaal was brutally murdered by her former lover.

This week, David Bonola, a former family handyman, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. “This heinous murder has devastated an entire family, left two boys without a mother and appalled the surrounding community,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expression. The 44-year-old faces 25 years in prison.

According to NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig, Bonola and Gaal began “an intimate affairin 2020 when he was hired to work at her home and the pair maintained a sporadic relationship when he was tasked with completing projects around the home. Days after Gaal’s remains were discovered, not just the police the murder weapon secured at the victim’s home but found Bonola’s jacket in the park. Also footage from a neighbor’s security camera showed Bonola rolls a duffel bag around.

Vinegar told reporters Following Gaal’s murder, which they learned the two had a “heated” argument at the family home over their relationship. “He’s either let in voluntarily or he uses a key that he knows about that’s hidden in the grill,” Essig said. “The two of them got into a heated argument in the basement. A knife is brandished. A violent struggle ensues, resulting in our victim being ruthlessly and brutally stabbed to death over 55 times.”

The argument according to court records, was prompted by Bonola’s belief that Gaal had given him HIV. After returning from a night out, Bonola came and confronted her at her home. “She gave me HIV,” Bonola reportedly told detectives after his arrest in April. “She lied to me, she used me. She told me she loves me. She couldn’t be with a person.” Of her confrontation, Bonola also told detectives that she “took a call from another man” and “said she would see him,” without giving further details. “That made me angry. I couldn’t accept it,” he reportedly told them. Gaal denied having HIV, told Bonola the affair was over, and “grabbed the knife and told him to leave her house or she would kill him.”

Bonola then confessed that he grabbed the knife and cut her throat. “She kept fighting and we fell. She was moving and trying to grab me, so I stabbed her in the neck to make her stop attacking me.” Over 50 stabs would ensue.

“In the past she told me that she sent a man to jail, so I sent a message to her husband pretending to be this guy because I was scared,” Bonola told detectives. “I took her laptop because she had sex tapes on the laptop. I threw her laptop into the Hudson River where I used to visit her often.”

Authorities say Bonola will face five years of post-release surveillance after serving his 25-year sentence. His sentencing is scheduled for November 16. Man admits killing former lover over affair after ‘heated argument’
