Mammoth Mountain opens early with snow in October

Mammoth Mountain is starting its season on Oct. 29 — two weeks ahead of schedule — after forecasts of an unusually early storm that could dump up to 2 feet of snow on the popular ski and snowboard destination by early next week.

“We can’t wait to hit the snow,” the mountain resort wrote in a Facebook post announcing the opening day of the new season. The slopes were originally scheduled to open on November 13th.

A number of activities are planned for Halloween weekend, including a countdown to the winter season and a Hard Rock themed costume contest.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service say snow could accumulate on Sunday afternoon on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada, where mammoth rises between the peaks.

By the time the storm hits Tuesday night, surrounding mountains could get 1 to 2 feet of fresh powder, said Heather Richards, a weather forecaster with the Weather Service’s Reno station.

The amount of snow on the mountain tops will vary, “but it’s certainly on the cards for over a foot to accumulate,” Richards said.

So much snow arriving in October “is well outside the norm,” Richards said.

KTLA-TV reported that this is only the 10th time in Mammoth’s history to open for skiing and snowboarding in October. Last year, in mid-November, the resort opened a day earlier than planned.

Any snow arriving this weekend will land on top of the existing natural and artificial snow. The potential new powder will “add to the incredible work our Rockstar snowmaking team has already done out there,” the resort said in its announcement.

Mammoth has already registered 17 inches of snow at its main lodge and 20 inches at the summit, Richards said.
