Long Beach man gets more than 40 years for killing immigrant going home in Anaheim – Orange County Register

A 32-year-old Long Beach man who shot and killed another man during an attempted robbery in Anaheim was sentenced Monday, Oct. 10, to 40 years to life in prison.
Brandon Deandre Norwood was convicted earlier this year of second-degree murder for the March 3, 2019 killing of Oscar Humberto Chunmichicoj, a 30-year-old Guatemalan immigrant.
According to prosecutors, Norwood followed Chunmichicoj in a rental car when Chunmichicoj walked back to his Anaheim apartment after filling two water jugs at a nearby store.
Chunmichicoj resisted when Norwood tried to rob him, prosecutors said, prompting Norwood to shoot Chunmichicoj once in the head.
Norwood fled, but detectives used surveillance footage of the murder to place Norwood at the scene.
Along with the second-degree murder conviction, the jury also found Norwood – whom authorities identified as the third striker – was guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
“This young man was a completely innocent victim who came to this country for a better life,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement after the sentencing. “Instead of pursuing his American dream, Oscar became the victim of a violent crime at the hands of a career criminal. …
“Thankfully, his killer will spend decades behind bars instead of chasing down hard-working people like Oscar,” added the prosecutor.
