Locked Up: Commissioners get approval for new Allen County jail site despite concerns from residents

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WANE) – After a lengthy process, the Allen County Commissioners can finally proceed with the Meyer Road site for the new Allen County Jail.

At Thursday’s Fort Wayne Board of Zoning Appeals appeals meeting, emergency use was approved by the board, allowing a prison to be built on the site by a 3-1 vote.

While the commissioners may have gotten what they wanted, many residents of the adjacent Sunnymede neighborhood have opposed the location from the start.

In fact, their many safety and environmental concerns prompted the Allen County Commissioners to delay the decision to this month after originally planning for it to be decided last month.

According to a schedule presented by the Allen County Commissioners in December 2022, construction of the new prison is scheduled to begin in 2024.
