Re “Bill to ban oil drilling off OC” (February 11):
When will Orange County voters learn not to vote for idealists like State Senator David Min?
Nothing in his bill makes economic sense to Californians.
His bill will pay “small” oil companies that have been dormant for more than 20 years, costing California taxpayers millions of dollars.
It would eliminate hundreds of high-paying jobs and reduce oil supplies, leading to higher gas prices.
No one likes oil spills that endanger birds and keep beaches closed.
These oil companies take every precaution to prevent oil spills, but accidents don’t happen very often.
Elected officials must stop proposing and passing bills that disrupt people’s lives and add to the extremely high cost of living in California. Leave us alone.

Biden speaks out about truck drivers’ protests in Canada
Re “US to Canada: Using Powers to End the Deadlock” (February 11):
President Biden has finally shown some strength in international affairs.
It’s time for him to show the world that the United States can still be tough on foreign policy. I assume he’s just warning by insisting that Canada act and get its truckers to behave. If he scores any success with Canada, maybe he will develop the courage to confront Russia and China on an issue or two. Baby steps may be the best option; he won’t even have to leave the basement.

No progress on nuclear waste after half a century
Your article, “Still A Little Advance on Nuclear Waste” on February 11, says it all. California got really smart back in 1976 with a moratorium on producing more nuclear waste until a solution was found to safely store what we already have. Half a century later, we are talking more, no action and no solution.
Meanwhile we currently have more than 300 million uranium pellets lying on the beach of San Onofre.
It will remain lethal for hundreds of thousands of years. Cancer remains the #1 killer in the state and more than 15 million people live within 100 kilometers of our own nuclear dump. The nuclear industry and the government have failed in public.
