HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — Officials say a 6-year-old boy was killed after being run over three times by a man who told police he was drinking on Saturday night.
Pedro Alberto Hernandez, 52, is charged with murder and DWI’s third offense.
According to records, the boy was walking with his grandfather on the 9700 block of Leawood Boulevard when he was walking through a parking lot when he was struck.
The grandfather yelled at Hernandez, who then allegedly stopped, backed up, and then ran the child over again, causing one of the tires to rest on the child’s face, according to records.
The grandfather continued to yell, and Hernandez was again accused of running over the child for the third time.
The boy’s grandfather told police Hernandez reportedly grinned at him and tried to drive off. The grandfather pulled Hernandez out of his car and pinned him against the hood until other witnesses held Hernandez until police arrived.
According to police, Hernandez admitted to drinking four 16-ounce beers while parked at work before driving to a laundry room where he planned to meet someone who owed him money.
This wouldn’t be the first time Hernandez has been accused of drinking and driving.
He was reportedly convicted of drunk driving in Harris County in 2015, DWI in Freestone County in 2016, and DWI in Fort Bend County in 2020.
He is still serving a 5-year probation on the 2020 DWI conviction.
Hernandez appeared in a probable cause court on Sunday, where a judge set his bail for both charges at a total of $600,000.
