Laguna Niguel man killed in small plane crash at Kansas airport – Orange County Register

Authorities say a Laguna Niguel man was killed when the small plane he was piloting crashed at an airport outside of Kansas City, Kansas over the weekend.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the pilot as 51-year-old Robert Douglas Ming, broadcaster KSHB reported. Officials said the crash occurred as the single-engine Piper Plane attempted to take off around 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Johnson County Executive Airport in Olathe, bound for Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Witnesses said the plane crashed and caught fire. Ming was the only person on the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate to try to determine the cause of the crash.
