KATY, Texas (KTRK) — A truck that neighbors believe drove through their Katy neighborhood crashed into a house while a family was inside.
“They think it’s a freeway and they’re speeding up and down that road all the time,” said Kevin Kesterson, who lives a few doors down from the incident. “You do it in the morning. You do it in the evening.”
People living along the Highland Knolls in Katy have asked officers to do something to get drivers to slow down before anything dangerous happens.
“How would you feel if we ran through your neighborhood like that?” asked Kesterson. “Would you like it if we sped through your neighborhood like that?”
On Tuesday evening, their fears came true.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the driver, who appeared to be under the influence, crashed into two parked cars, a mailbox and a tree before hitting the house.
“It was only a matter of time,” Kesterton said.
A couple and their five children were at home at the time.
Two of the children, 8 and 11 years old, were watching TV on the living room sofa.
“There was a big, beautiful marble fireplace that was thrown onto the sofa on impact,” said Kevin Johnson, the homeowner. “It stopped when it hit the sofa, so no one was seriously hurt.”
The two children suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
“Most of it was just the shock of what had happened,” Johnson said. “They were kind of traumatized by it, but they’re fine.”
The driver also went to the hospital, where the district attorney asked the suspect to have blood drawn to test for alcohol.
While Highland Knolls is a busy street, people who live here say motorists should respect that it’s still a neighborhood.
“Just because it has four lanes doesn’t mean it’s a freeway,” Kesterson said. “You have to treat it as a neighborhood and such, because that’s what it is, and there are a lot of families in this neighborhood with a lot of young children.”
