Even if you don’t count yourself among the audience of Keeping up with the KardashiansYou’re probably aware that Kanye “Ye” West was a central plot line of the show last season great lengths (flying trainer for short) to heroically steal his ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s sextape – forever eliminating the threat of it being used as a weapon against her or her children. “We’ll never be blackmailed again,” West said on the episode as Kardashian and co wept with gratitude.

Well, in one harrowing investigation through Rolling Stone, numerous former employees have anonymously shared that West had no qualms about showing intimate photos and videos of Kardashian — as well as his own homemade sex tapes — to Yeezy and Adidas employees. Disturbingly, this was just one element of an inappropriate and “abusive” company culture described by two dozen former employees. Corresponding Rolling Stone:

Behind the scenes, that Celebrity boss did more than just test the limits of professionalism: ex-Yeezy and Adidas employees and creative associates allege that he played pornography to Yeezy employees in meetings; discussed porn and showed an intimate photo of Kim Kardashian in job interviews; and showed members of the Yeezy team an explicit video and photos of Kardashian, as well as his own sex tapes.

It’s been a month since Adidas dropped the Yeezy frontman after a spate of anti-Semitic posts on social media and hate speech online, but those who once worked with West only express concerns about their former boss and the “intimidation tactics” frequently employed by West magazine. The deeply problematic behavior, which was “provocative, frequently sexualized and often directed at women,” raised concerns for many employees who still do not feel comfortable calling the demands for fear of professional and personal retaliation.

This week, dozens of former Senior Yeezy employees sent a letter (titled “The Truth About Yeezy: A Call to Action for Adidas Leadership”) to Adidas board members and the brand’s new CEO, expressing their concerns about the now-broken partnership between Adidas and Yeezy set out to urge her to address “the toxic and chaotic environment that Kanye West has created.” The letter alleges “a very sick pattern of predatory behavior toward women.” Rolling Stone, who received it, shared an excerpt: “He has exploded in the past few years with abusive remarks about women in the room and resorted to sexually disturbing innuendos when providing design feedback. This type of reaction from a brand partner is one that Adidas employees should never be exposed to, and Adidas leadership should never tolerate.” Adidas declined to answer the magazine’s questions.

Allegations by former employees who worked closely with West range from the bizarre (one new employee recalled that West showed him hardcore pornography on his laptop when they first met) to the disturbing (former Yeezy president Pete Fox revealed, that West’s behavior varied wildly from welcoming to inciting) to cruel (After a disagreement, West allegedly forced a young employee to sit on the floor and told her, “You don’t deserve to sit at the table”). All of this, former employees say, was part of a broader pattern of harm that one employee compared to that of an “emotional abuser.”

However, West’s fascination with porn and explicit content is said to have been such a problem that several employees can recall more than one instance of West showing or referencing porn in the workplace. Such an inclination can be seen in West 30-minute YouTube documentary.

“He was in a meeting talking to you and he was rattling around on his laptop” to play a porn video, an employee said Rolling Stone. “And he’s like, ‘I know it’s uncomfortable, but I need that in the background so I can focus.’ And you’d say, ‘Uhhhhh, oh-kay.’” The former executive claimed to have seen West play porn videos in meetings at least five times. Such incidents also went beyond meetings. A senior staffer recalls that in early 2018, while interviewing an applicant, West interrupted her during her presentation to offer unsolicited advice: “If you ever get stuck creatively, just watch porn for 10 minutes.” This wisdom, as employees said, was distributed more than once.

“If you want to be part of Yeezy, we say crazy shit here. You have to stick to that. We keep moving and keep creating,” the high-ranking employee reminded West of the job applicant. “We create products with passion. I literally want to fuck my shoes. That’s how good they are.” At another meeting, West allegedly showed “MILF porn” and said to a staffer, “You see that feeling? That feeling you get when you look at this? That’s how we want people to feel when they put on our shoes.”

Perhaps one of the most disturbing allegations is that West showed intimate photos of Kim Kardashian, to whom he was married, to another potential staffer who was in office for an interview in 2018. “My wife just sent me this,” West told them. “It was very insightful and personal,” the creative recalled Rolling Stone. “I didn’t really react.” That same year, West played an explicit (and private) video of Kardashian to members of the Yeezy creative team. He was also known for showing creatives and collaborators his own homemade explicit videos featuring women. Employees said the workplace was “so cult-like” that they didn’t even immediately respond to such incidents.

Kardashian hasn’t addressed the story just yet, though Comments on Rolling Stone‘s latest Instagram posts are as patently misogynist and unnecessarily vile as one might expect. “I mean… most of us saw her in an explicit video. How do you think she got famous??” wrote one user.

Sexual comments were also common for West. A former employee recalled being shown a text from West about a model for a new pair of shoes the design team was working on: “He said, ‘We really need this shoe because all I’m thinking about is Kim’s butt and the shoe .'” Still, several former Yeezy employees said they didn’t find West’s behavior overtly “gendered,” though it made — mostly — female employees uncomfortable or “intimidated.”

When West convinced Adidas executives to move much of the Adidas showroom to his Wyoming ranch in 2019, the behavior only got worse. West, a former employee recalled, often scolded a certain female employee for her looks. “He’s just obsessed with power, and he has all the power and money to get someone to cut their hair, to get someone to lose their weight,” the staffer said. “To the same person he can say things like, ‘You fat bitch,’ and then that person still has to be forced to stay because they’re making money from it. They have a rent to pay.” The worker added that she “feared for their welfare”.

Five former employees also claimed that West made unrealistic demands on employees. “He could ask a chef to do a song and an architect to be his personal assistant,” said a Wyoming employee. “He can ask a song producer to design a school and the next day it’s going to be an orphanage and the other days it’s going to be an airport.”

In October 2022, just before Adidas ended its Contracted with West, the rapper and ailing magnate rallied staff members to bring his many troubles to their attention. This includes pornography, said a former employee.

But some employees felt West was only partially responsible for the toxic workplace: How and why West was able to thrive during his time at Adidas comes back to the undeniable profit generated by Yeezy – and by extension West – a staff said. One of the former senior staffers said that some leaders “were absent when they should have been” and that West’s provocative behavior “was allowed to fester” because Yeezy brought in an estimated $1 billion to $2 billion in annual sales for Adidas.

“As much as we’d all like to blame Kanye alone,” the former employees wrote, “the undeniable truth is that the Adidas leadership team and board have been of great assistance.”
