Kai Rooney followed in his father’s footsteps as he scored a fantastic goal for Manchester United’s academy team against derby rivals Man City.
Wayne’s eldest child, aged 12, has impressed since he signed for his father’s old club last December, where he has since been joined by Cristiano Ronaldo’s son.
Rooney, who won five Premier League titles at Old Trafford, is the top scorer in Manchester derby history with 11 goals against vociferous neighbors United.
And no one will forget the overhead kick in the 2-1 win at the 2011 Theater of Dreams.
While his son Kai still has a long way to go before he reaches the same heights as his father, a goal for Man United Under-12s showed his undeniable potential.
Rooney Jr. – wearing the No. 18 this time rather than Wayne’s old No. 10 shirt – scored a fine curl shot with his left foot after running to the right and landing at the bottom of a through ball.
The youngster’s shot was perfect as he opened his body and sent the shot to the top left, giving the City keeper no chance.
The son of the Derby County head coach clearly has an eye for goal, having also scored for the U12s against West Brom.

Although some will inevitably draw their own conclusions as to why Kai is in United’s youth ranks, the form Rooney Jr is producing points to a serious future in the game after he was stunned during a couple of games in 2021 at trial .
He scored four goals in a game against Man United’s other great rivals Liverpool.
And against Stoke City, Kai single-handedly tore them apart by scoring and delivering a hat-trick of goals and assists in a 6-3 win.
And United legend Wayne but all questions about his son’s talent after penning a youth contract with the Old Trafford club and insisting he is there on merits.
“I’m a proud father,” Wayne said after Kai signed his contract in December 2020, having coached from Major League Soccer at Man City and Bethesda Soccer Club during his father’s time at DC United.
“He worked hard, he obviously came to the States with us to get on with his football.
“He went on trial at Manchester United and impressed the coaches. He signed his forms yesterday, so I’m happy for him.
“He had other options, other clubs to go to but he decided he wanted to sign for Manchester United so it was his decision and not mine.”
