Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool are unlikely to make any further signings in the January transfer window as he insisted: ‘We can’t solve our problems by buying players.’
Dutch attacker Cody Gakpo joined from PSV Eindhoven for an initial fee of £37million but Klopp is increasingly vocal about bolstering his midfield department.
However, with limited funds and top target Jude Bellingham unavailable until the summer, further signings seem unlikely before the end of the month.
Asked about the prospect of further signings, Klopp said: “I don’t think so. The situation is what it is. We need to talk about it because you ask me about it, but in the end it’s my job to use the guys I have.
“I like the teams we field but when we start changing you realize we don’t have three, four, five options and when we have options they become quite young right away. That’s fine, but it’s the situation and you can’t solve every problem in the transfer window.
“I know in a dreamland you just buy players, but I don’t see that coming. We can’t solve the problems like other teams do and I know it makes headlines, but we do it our way. We really squeeze everything out.”
When asked if the issue was related to availability or a lack of funds following Gakpo’s death, Klopp added: “I have to tell you the money story again? What could be the reason we have the money like crazy but the players are not buying even if they are available?
“We have a problem at the moment, four of our attacking players are injured. If we buy another one then they will come back and we have seven forwards, we couldn’t even put them all on the Champions League list.
“Injuries are a big shadow for all of us because you can’t sort that out in the transfer window, sometimes you have to but most of the time we just have to get through until the lads come back. The transfer market is not a solution for us at the moment.
“But if someone tells me ‘yes, there it is,’ then we will do it, but in this particular situation I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
