Joni Mitchell and her beret is all that is pure in this world

Being human lately is an objectively crappy situation on this slowly decaying earth. Everything is bad: the senseless wars, the surveillance of women’s bodies, Bezos flying into space in a fat rocket ship while his workers suffer (even though they are unionized this week while he was gone, damn yeah.) But during the 2022 Grammy Awards, the vision of a little red beret brought me joy for a fleeting moment — an emotion I wasn’t sure I could relate to anymore — because she rested on the head of living legend Joni Mitchell.

Yes, 78-year-old Joni Fucking Mitchell was at the Grammys. We haven’t seen her much since she sadly suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015, but earlier this week the brilliant singer-songwriter appeared to be honored in a rare public appearance as MusiCares Person of the Year. Then, much to our delight, she reappeared on the red carpet on Sunday night in a billowing white pantsuit, adorned with brightly colored sunflowers and pansies and poppies, with a matching red cane, red necklace, red booties, red nails, and so damn perfect red beret.

The classic French hat sat atop Joni Mitchell’s white wavy pigtails as she introduced Brandi Carlisle in a little piece of music history. It was there that she won a Grammy for her ninth career Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967) in the Best Historical Album category, and it was there to remind us that Joni Mitchell is all that’s good and sweet and serious in our abysmal little world.

There aren’t many things left that I seriously love. But I really love Big Yellow Taxi. I cry when I hear the lyrics, “I wish I had a river to skate on.” I love a songwriter as brilliant, multi-faceted, and all-encompassing as Joni Mitchell because there’s just no one else in the world there like her. She’s the kind of woman that Once said in a Rolling Stone Q&A: “I’ll tell you one thing that’s quite arrogant. This guy once approached me at a public event and said to me, ‘Joni, you are the best songwriter in the world.’ And I said ‘Ha’ and sort of giggled.”

This red beret is the chuckle of Joni Mitchell. It’s a certain kind of feminism that doesn’t need to be shouted at, just transported beautifully. This red beret is a disillusioned woman who can still put her finger on the obscure sense of infatuation and the taste of longing. This red beret is a time machine reminiscent of the Joni of the 70’s when she was a very young woman with a very different beret, but a very good one too.

She kept it real. Nothing is pure anymore except Joni Mitchell and her beret.
