Jon Batiste had a lot more to celebrate than meets the eye at the 2022 Grammy Awards on Sunday night. hours before The late show with Stephen Colbert Bandleader took home the coveted album of the year for his album Hardware We arehe revealed in an interview with CBS Sunday morning that he and his longtime partner Suleika Jaouad secretly married last month.
“We got married the day before I was hospitalized to have my bone marrow transplant,” Jaouad told the show of wanting to marry after the author of the best-selling cancer memoir Between two kingdoms was diagnosed a second time with leukemia.
“We knew we wanted to get married, I think, since the first week we dated. That’s when Jon first approached me about marriage. So we had 8 years,” Jaouad laughed at her long, slow walk to the altar. “It’s not, you know, a hasty decision!”
She said because of the rush involved in the “tiny, beautiful little ceremony,” they had to get by without official rings and opt for ceremonial “bread bands” rather than precious metals. Batiste told correspondent Jim Axelrod that the marriage was confirmation that the couple had a future together.
“Yes sir. It’s an act of defiance,” Batiste said. “The darkness will try to overtake you, but just turn on the light. Focus on the light. Hold on to the light.” Indeed, Jaouad said that Batiste admitted after her diagnosis that he had been working on a proposal for months.”He said to me, ‘I just want to be absolutely clear that I’m not proposing to you because of this diagnosis. It took me a year to design your ring.’ So, just know that timing has nothing to do with it. But I want you to know that this diagnosis doesn’t change anything. It just makes me realize that I want to make a difference and that we want to be together'” , she said, “But when we realized we had this tiny window before the bone marrow transplant, we went for it.”
She said they got a last-minute marriage license thanks to a friend while she was in surgery and having a catheter placed in her chest, which she described as an “absurd” situation. “There were nurses around, there were surgeons around. We had this computer. I was wearing a hospital gown,” Jaouad said. “But we did it. And that night we bought our wedding outfits together, last minute, lots of laughter. But it wasn’t, you know, what we had in mind. There were maybe four people present. It was private. It was tiny. And it was perfect.”
Batiste, the most-nominated artist at Sunday’s Grammys, took the stage in a dazzling cape to accept the honor for his Album of the Year and thank the people who found deeper meaning in his album. “You know, I really believe this to the core: there is no best musician, best artist, best dancer, best actor,” he said. “The creative arts are subjective and reach people at a point in their lives when they need them most. A song or an album is made and it almost has a radar for finding the person when they need it most.”
By the end of the evening, Batiste had won five trophies, including Best American Roots Performance and Best Song, Best Music Video, and an unprecedented tie for Best Score Visual Media Soundtrack for his work on Soul, bind with The Queen’s Gambit.
