Many people have given their opinion on the new season of The Mandalorian, and to our surprise, not all are positive. Some seem to think that bringing Mando and Grogu – the galaxy’s favorite father-son duo – back together was an oversight of Imperial proportions, and we don’t entirely disagree. Before you put a bounty on our heads, listen to us.
It’s true that The Mandalorian wouldn’t be the same if this couple were permanently separated, but getting them back together so soon could be a mishandled narrative choice that hastens a deeper payoff down the line. Still, the show’s creator, Jon Favreau, seems to think the decisions made to reunite the pair make perfect sense.
If anyone knows the narrative payoff, it’s Jon Favreau, arguably responsible for kickstarting the MCU and the director of Elevenand what kind of Scrooge doesn’t like Eleven? In conversation with Rich (ironic) Favreau discusses why the creatives behind the show made the decisions they did — and, more importantly, why it all adds up.
“We couldn’t just do a hard reset. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for people who may not have seen it Boba Fett’s book. But I think Boba Fett’s book offered time to pass. You’ve seen how Mando was without Baby Yoda, and we’ve seen how Grogu was without the Mandalorian, and neither of them did particularly well. So their getting back together was a really good plot point that allows us to jump back into season 3 while still maintaining the core relationship.”
Honestly, Jon Favreau is right. The Mandalorian Is around Mando and Grogu. If one or the other isn’t there, their relationship can’t move the show forward, it would cease to exist. In essence, it boils down to a simple idea; If Mando and Grogu aren’t together, we don’t get a story.
Although the circumstances of their reunion could have been handled differently, the fact that they were reunited at all was a foregone conclusion. Watching Din Djarin (the Mandalorian himself) trudge through the cosmos without his little green sidekick wouldn’t make much sense in our humble opinion.
This fact may frustrate some people, but in the immortal words of Darth Vader – search for your feelings, you know it’s true.
