John Bennett becomes new Rangers chairman as Douglas Park resigns

The founder of Park’s Motor Group, who was chairman for three years, will also step down as director of the Ibrox Club.

The Board of Directors of Rangers International Football Club PLC has unanimously approved the appointment of Vice Chairman John Bennett as the new Club Chairman.

A statement from the Rangers club read: “Douglas Park, who served as chairman of Rangers International Football Club PLC (RIFC) for three years, has decided to step down from his role. The RIFC Board of Directors voted unanimously to appoint current vice chairman John zu Bennett as the club’s new chairman.

“Douglas became chairman of Rangers in late March 2020 and took on the role in the most difficult of circumstances. He became chairman at the start of the Covid pandemic and subsequently oversaw Rangers winning their fifty-fifth Scottish League title for only the fifth major European final in the club’s 150-year history and the Scottish for the first time in over a decade win cup.

Regarding his decision to step down, Park told the club’s website, “It has been a great honor to serve the club as a director and chairman. During my eight-year tenure, we have endured exceptional pressure. I am glad that we have stabilized and strengthened.” Club and it is now time for me to hand the baton to a new Chairman for the next stage in the Club’s development. I look forward to continuing to attend games to support the team and I wish John and everyone at Rangers Football Club the very best.”

Newly appointed Chairman Bennett commented: “On behalf of all my colleagues and the entire Rangers family, I would like to sincerely thank Douglas for his eight years of service. He has led the club through exceptionally challenging times over the past three years. It is a great comfort that although Douglas is no longer a board member, he will be by our side to support us in our relentless pursuit of success.”
