Jess Phillips MP adds Brianna Ghey to list of women killed

Labor MP Jess Phillips has included trans girl Brianna Ghey on a list of women suspected of having been killed by men in the past 12 months to be read in the House of Commons.

The MP has taken on the task of reading the names out loud during the annual International Women’s Day debate in Westminster.

It took the MP more than five minutes to read the entire list.

Addressing the decidedly empty room, the MP said: “In the first year that I read the list of women killed, women who had been killed by men, none of the women’s names elicited a moment of recognition from anyone but their bereaved families.

“This year there will be names on that list that we’ve all heard of. Women who have become household names after their brutal murders.”

At the end of the reading, Phillips said: “This year we also remember Brianna Ghey. A young woman was brutally killed where a young woman and man were charged.”

16-year-old trans girl Ghey, from Birchwood, was found with fatal stab wounds by a citizen in Culcheth Linear Park, Warrington, on February 11.

Two 15-year-olds, a boy and a girl, whose names cannot be released for legal reasons, have been charged with murder and are due to stand trial at Liverpool Crown Court on July 10.

After the reading, anti-trans fanatics soon took to Twitter to slam Jess Phillips for including Brianna Ghey’s name on the list.

“Shame on you for politicizing the memory of murdered women. You really are irretrievable,” wrote one Twitter user.

“I can’t imagine how abandoned some women are feeling right now. You didn’t honor her, you used her,” another report said.

Another person suggested that Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield read the list next year.

“It seems you cannot be trusted not to compromise @K_IngalaSmith’s work to honor women and girls,” they said.

However, amid the backlash, many more people praised the MP for including Ghey’s name on the list and acknowledging her death.
