disease is here and it’s going pretty well. But the journey to that moment was not so smooth, not only because of that Covid-19 delaysbut because of the methods of its star, Jared Leto.

In conversation with Uproxx, disease Director Daniel Espinosa confirmed a not-so-surprising rumor about his star. Apparently, Leto was the physical limitations of his role, Dr. Michael Morbius, so committed that he used the character’s crutches even when the cameras weren’t rolling. And the time it took him to go to and from the bathroom delayed production. As a result, it was agreed that Leto would use a wheelchair to get him to and from the bathroom to speed up the process.

“I think what Jared thinks, what Jared thinks, is that he kind of needed the pain of those moves, even when he was playing regular Michael Morbius, because he’s had that pain his whole life,” Espinosa said. “Even though he’s alive and strong, there has to be a difference. Hey, man, it’s people’s processes.” And while Espinosa acknowledged the phenomenon, he didn’t even bother tapping it. “All actors believe in processes. And you as a director support everything that makes it the best it can be,” he said.

All of this is interesting because it’s further confirmation of a trend we’ve been following here on io9 for a while: tHat Jared Leto can be a threat to his co-stars. Don’t forget that the actor admitted to sending his suicide squad Starring Anal Beads and Used Condoms, before you go back that (Even do not forget also the dead animalsallegedly). He also filmed Bladerunner 2049 completely blind, because his character, Niander Wallace, was blind. “It was like seeing Jesus walking into a temple,” director Denis Villeneuve said at the time. “Everyone went super quiet, and there was a kind of sacred moment. Everyone was in awe. It was so beautiful and powerful – I was moved to tears.”

Which we suspect is the intended answer here. Leto’s Method Acting can produce very impressive results on screen in general. But off-screen, when it gets a movie behind schedule, that’s a bigger problem.
