James Gunn debunks DC rumor about Will Smith’s return

Even if the studio behind the DC Universe seems to be in shambles, which has to do with corporate mergers galore, abandoned projects leaving scars, and certain actors wreaking havoc, there are still some bright spots in the future of the franchise. Chief among them is the corner populated by James Gunn’s stable of eccentric characters, including the projects peacemaker and The Suicide Squad.

On the television side, it looks like Gunn’s world will continue unabated, with the white-haired creative reassuring fans about a second season peacemaker during the aftermath of Batgirl’s cancellation. Gunn has also provided a loose production window for the project, indicating that filming could begin in the next few months.

The cinematic side of things is a little less clear. Also as Gunn’s restatement of David Ayers 2016 suicide squad Generally well received, the creator has left the door open for his next in-universe feature project. While he may revisit the squad at some point, he seems keen to explore more of what the DC has to offer first.

In the absence of any real news on the future of Suicide Squad within the DCEU, rumors have swirled wildly, although some creatives have worked hard to set the record straight.

Gunn clears up rumors about Suicide Squad’s Will Smith returning

direct current

James Gunn, writer and director behind it The Suicide Squad and peacemakeras well as Guardians of the Galaxy Stable of Projects, over at Marvel, took to Twitter again to debunk a new rumor about the future of the suicide squad Franchise.

user @GrayHarden77 floated a claim by pop culture commentator Mikey Sutton about the future of the DCU, sharing that Warner Bros. Discovery is said to be pushing for one suicide squad Threequel starring Will Smith as Deadshot. Furthermore, according to the rumour, “Ayer is the front runner to direct it.”

Now, Mikey Sutton says WBD wants a Suicide Squad 3 with Will Smith at the helm, but they don’t want it to follow James Gunn’s version. He said Ayer was the front runner when it came to directing.

In response to the question of whether or not this rumor is true, Gunn gave a curt but clear answerto state that “It is not.”

What’s next for the Suicide Squad?

While rumors about the future of the DCEU are plentiful, Gunn has done his best in the past to get the records of projects he is involved with straight. As such, fans took his word for it.

This recent clarification seems equally trustworthy. While the rumor seemed pretty unlikely on its own, the added dose of doubt provided by Gunn makes things that much clearer.

Despite this, the rumor itself is still interesting. The DC fan base has previously proven resilient, manifesting projects and changes that seemed impossible. In this case, however, it seems that this case of fan zeal is just that. While Gunn’s work in the DCEU isn’t very popular, it’s still universally well-regarded and unlikely to be deleted or ignored in the next entry.

Though many DC fans are struggling to assert themselves, even forcing changes to promotional materials, some battles seem unwinnable. With enough fan support behind Gunn and a strong track record, it seems his changes to the structure of the DCEU will last.

While Gunn himself isn’t entirely sure his next DC film will be about The Squad, it’s unlikely the franchise will return to its Ayer-centric roots. Hard news about the future of the Suicide Squad is yet to come, however, so it seems only time will tell which direction the failed team will take next.
