Jada Pinkett Smith has a deal for an uncompromising memoir

NEW YORK (AP) – Jada Pinkett Smith has had a lifetime of thoughts that she would like to write down.
The actress, singer, entrepreneur and co-host of the Facebook watch show Red Table Talk has landed a deal for what Dey Street Books calls an “honest and gripping memoir,” which will include, among other things, her “complicated marriage to Will Smith “ We will deal with other topics. The book is currently untitled and planned for release next fall.
“Jada Pinkett Smith chronicles the lessons she learned over the course of a difficult but compelling journey – a roller coaster ride from the depths of suicidal depression to the heights of personal rediscovery and celebration of authentic female power,” reads the announcement Thursday from Dey Street, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.
According to the announcement, Pinkett Smith will talk about her “unconventional upbringing in Baltimore,” her friendship with the late rapper Tupac Shakur, her love story with Smith, and her experiences with motherhood.
“In a crisis at age 40, Jada shares the agonizing choices she had to make to redefine every aspect of her life,” the editor said.
Known for films like Collateral and The Matrix Reloaded, Pinkett Smith, 51, is vocal about her battle with depression and the hair loss condition alopecia areata, the source of Chris Rock’s infamous joke at this year’s Academy Awards.
When the comedian compared her shaved head to Demi Moore’s looks in GI Jane, Will Smith – who published his own best-selling memoir last year – stunned the world by stepping from his front-row seat and slapping Rock on the face .
Pinkett Smith addressed the slap two months later on an episode of “Red Table Talk,” saying the incident prompted thousands to come to her with their own experiences of alopecia areata. She also said she hopes “these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, to speak out, and to reconcile.”
