Jack Butland completes Manchester United medical and goes on loan

Jack Butland has completed his medical treatment and will be loaned out to Manchester United until the end of the season after an agreement was reached with Crystal Palace.

The 29-year-old’s move comes six months after scouts identified him as David De Gea’s first-choice back-up goalkeeper. A move was imminent until Butland’s hand was broken when he saved an Anthony Martial shot during a pre-season game in Melbourne.

United instead turned to Martin Dubravka but Butland were given a second chance when Newcastle recalled the 33-year-old earlier in the year.

He also has a home in the Manchester area from his days at Stoke City.

There will be no purchase option under the loan. United will cover his wages throughout the loan period.

Butland arrives after not playing for Crystal Palace this season.

He will now join Tom Heaton to support United’s long-time number 1 David de Gea in the goalkeeping department.

Erik ten Hag said of Butland’s arrival during Thursday’s press conference: “What he brings. I am very happy. We have David. It’s very clear that he’s our number one.

“But something can happen and we have to prepare for that.

“Martin has been recalled and the way we are set up we need a squad with three goalkeepers. We have so many games that you need three good goalkeepers in training.”

Butland has six months left on his Palace deal, although the club have an option to extend his contract for another year.

United had considered calling Dean Henderson off his loan spell at Nottingham Forest but they think the 25-year-old is best served by staying at the City Ground.

Ten Hag’s side face Everton next in the FA Cup on Friday.
