Season two, which has now been confirmed, is also set to move to ITV’s new streaming service ITVX, with filming due to begin this summer.

It will continue with Scott’s troubled detective, who has settled back into Edinburgh’s major crime team after collapsing over the toll of the latest investigation.

“When a high-ranking member of the establishment is found dead in a Leith warehouse, Lennox is thrown into what quickly turns out to be the work of a serial killer,” the synopsis continues.

“As the casualties pile up, Lennox realizes this is anything but random. This is the work of a lonely killer with an ax to grind. Lennox is never far from his mental turmoil and is being pushed back to his demons by this new case.”

Welsh said of the renewal: “I loved working on the first season of crimeand [co-writer] Dean Cavanagh and I are already having a lot of fun developing scripts for the second season. It was wonderful to work with such a talented cast and we hope to continue to push these memorable characters forward this time. No more Mister Nice Guy from Dean and I.”

Scott added: “Do crime was one of the most exciting experiences of my career. I am so grateful to be working again with the amazing Irvine Welsh, my wonderful producing partner Tony Wood and everyone at Buccaneer and ITV. I feel very lucky.”

crime The first series also starred Joanna Vanderham (warrior), Angela Griffin (white lines), Ken Stott (The ditch) and Jamie Sives (fault).

Welsh is perhaps best known for writing train spotting, which was adapted into the famous 1996 film. Last year it was confirmed that the author was working on a musical version for the stage, to be premiered in the West End.
