Instrumental music nominees – Orange County Register

The following 117 students have been nominated for the 2023 Artist of the Year in instrumental music by teachers and private instructors at Orange County high schools and arts organizations.
This arts discipline has been divided into five specialties: jazz, piano, strings, winds and percussion, and world/cultural and commercial music. Semifinalists in each specialty will be chosen by a panel of instrumental music teachers and announced on April 23 at ocregister.com.
The nominees are listed with an endorsement from their nominating teacher, the primary instrument(s) they play, and a link to the student’s work.
JAZZ
Kenneth Adunagow (tenor saxophone)
“Kenneth is one of the (if not the) best jazz players to come through Beckman H.S. … Kenneth is one to watch, because he will go on to be a household name, like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Count Basie. Brendan Birozy (bass)

Benny Carruth (trumpet)
“Beyond just the music, Benny has displayed incredible growth his senior year by making a true impact in the high school jazz band and marching band programs. Ian Cho (guitar)
“Ian Cho plays clarinet for me in the classical setting bands and marching band, but where he really shines is in Jazz. He is our resident soloist for all concerts, as he is always ready to create something new and fresh, all on the spot. He hears harmonies and melodies that are truly inventive and one of a kind. I have never heard him repeat himself, even in rehearsals. Gabriel Haraldson-Decker (violin)

Joseph Hufford (guitar)
“Joseph was born to perform. Since he was introduced to jazz, he has spent every day trying new things and seeking new music to play. Joseph loves to create and improvise and shares his music with the community. Brian Keane (alto saxophone)
“Brian has not only demonstrated high musical excellence, but manages a rigorous academic schedule as well. Having only been his director for 2 years, Brian is certainly a student leader on and off the stage. Nathan Morales (alto saxophone)
“Nathan Morales is one of the types on individuals that lives and breathes music. Everything that he does relates back to music. Brendan Mulholland (alto saxophone)
“Brendan Mulholland is a talented musician who shows a lot of promise. …As a young jazz artist, Brendan has made considerable progress these last couple months both in musical understanding and performance skill. Most recently, he was featured in a sax solist for our Duke Ellington field show throughout the fall season. Brady Nguyen (percussion, drums and piano)

Oliver Peterson (piano)

Nathan Schrodt (trumpet)
“Nathan Schrodt is a multitalented musician, actor, and creator. He is one of the most creative students I have ever taught. He is a skilled, curious, and musical performer on his primary instrument (the trumpet), but has also taught himself to be a competent jazz piano player. Most of all, however, Nathan is a composer. Ava Thorlin (cello)

Evan Toner (alto saxophone)
“His main instrument is alto saxophone, but I quickly recognized his musical skills, and suggested he begin to learn oboe. He is developing into a wonderful oboe player, and performs oboe in the wind ensemble as well as with the full symphony orchestra. … He does a wonderful job collaborating with fellow musicians as well as the director to coordinate repertoire, rehearsals, and performances. Michael Wang (baritone saxophone)
“Michael Wang has one of the best ears I have come across while teaching. He can pick out notes, tuning, and harmony, from a mile away. He volunteered to play bari sax for me as a freshman and has anchored our groups ever since. He prefers to play alto sax for jazz and for soloing, but he is not afraid to pull out the bari and honk out some cool bass rhythms. “Hoahan, or Howard, is not just an excellent jazz pianist. He is an excellent communicator, leader, friend and listener. “Emily Chen has been an integral part of our programs this year. While she was not involved earlier, due to sports and academics, she did study piano for many years and has completed the highest levels of Certificate of Merit. She has performed this year with our Festival Orchestra, Piano Ensemble, and Musical Theater Pit Orchestra, all at the highest level. With a current GPA of 4.47, her focus has been in many ways with academics, but this year Emily has taken the opportunities to participate in our music programs as well.
