Indiana men charged with murder

MADISON, Ind. — Was it a confrontation gone wrong? Or was it planned all along to shoot Justin Hall? Text messages from one of the suspects in the case indicate the latter, according to documents filed with Jefferson County Circuit Court.

Matthew Redd, 36, and Christian Kennedy, 21, have been charged with murder and intimidation with a deadly weapon after Hall was shot dead outside a Madison, Indiana, factory on December 29, 2022.

The three met in the Madison Precision Products parking lot that morning, according to a probable cause affidavit. Minutes later, Kennedy called the police to report that he had shot Hall.

Police learned that Kennedy and Redd are cousins, and Hall was dating another of Redd’s relatives. Redd told police the confrontation was intended to “intimidate” Hall, who had a pending domestic battery case involving Redd’s relative.

Surveillance video from outside Madison Precision Products showed Kennedy getting out of his car, gun drawn, and gave an affidavit as to the probable cause. Redd is then seen confronting Hall before Hall punches Redd in the face.

Redd is then seen on camera waving to Kennedy, who approaches Hall and then gets punched in the face by him. At this point, Hall turned on Redd and Kennedy fired multiple shots at Hall, which court documents said sent him to the ground.

Redd is then seen on camera punching Hall while he was on the ground and throwing an object in the snow. A later search revealed that the discarded item was brass knuckles.

Investigators received text messages sent from Redd’s phone at approximately 12:15 a.m. on the day of the murder.

“…I will wipe out all guns and bullets for him to be shot [sic] Having gun remains on his hands and I’m going to bleach mine for him to say he did it [sic] Self Defense…” read a message sent to a friend.

In the text messages allegedly sent by Redd, he also told his friend he had a cousin in the military who had a “trunk full of guns” and could “get away with deadly force.”

Redd was also charged with obstruction of justice after police said he was trying to get rid of the brass knuckles he used on Hall.

He later admitted hitting Hall with the brass knuckles immediately after the shot and falling to the ground.

An autopsy performed on Hall revealed that he had three gunshot wounds and visible marks on his head caused by the brass knuckles.

Court documents also said the relative who was dating Hall showed up with him before the confrontation and entered the building before the violence began. Indiana men charged with murder
