We often hear subtle racist dog whistles in politics, and then sometimes we hear the cartoonishly blatant. This is one of latter kind.
Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) published an ad Friday denouncing “rising” violent crime in Louisiana and defended police officers against those who called for it “Disappoint the police” in his signature (probably fake) popular south Kennedy drawls straight into the camera: “Look, if you hate cops just because they’re cops, next time you get in trouble, call a crackhead.”
“Bright leaders blame the police,” she says Kennedy calling for at least one Doubling the police presence in New Orleans. “I blame the criminals”
“Crackhead”, is of course a racist derogatory term that became more and more popular while former president Richard Nixon’sWar on Drugs,” when blacks were twice as likely to be arrested for drug offenses as whites. That was due partially the way the judiciary treats crack cocaine use different than more expensive Powder. Per AP:
The racial differences reveal the unequal toll of war. After the passage of tougher penalties for crack cocaine and other drugs, black incarceration rates in America skyrocketedfrom about 600 per 100,000 people in 1970 to 1,808 in 2000. During the same period, the rate for the Latino population increased from 208 per 100,000 people to 615, while the white incarceration rate increased from 103 per 100,000 people to 242.
Kennedy is up for re-election this year, and his leading challenger is Gary Chambers, Jr., a black civil rights activist from Baton Rouge. Chambers shot back pretty sharply at Kennedy‘s comments with their own ad.
“This is Louisiana politics at its finest,” Chambers says sarcastically in the video, cut immediately to the senator‘s “Crackhead” remark. “But it’s also racist as hell. He didn’t say anything about opioid addicts, meth addicts, or all that stuff because he was trying to talk about a certain subset of people he doesn’t mind in Louisiana.”
show me the lie
This latest racist commentis of course far from the only openly bigoted what Kennedy has ever proudly said on a national stage. kennedy recommendedathized with Barrett about the “pain” of being labeled “racist” and “white colonialist”.
Louisiana’s other white male Republican Senator is no better. Bill Cassidy said earlier this year that only Louisiana has one of the worst mortality rates in the country if you include black women in the stats because they’re more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes because of… well, racism in the health care system.
In summary: About a third of Louisiana‘s population is black, and supposedly all men represents her in the USA Senate are racist white men. The state doesn’t need more cops; it needs a whole new leadershipbad and immediately.
