I quit my 9-5 job to pursue my streaming side job full-time – now I’m making up to £9,000 a month

A WOMAN turned her ‘favourite hobby’ into a full-time job and has made more than $215,000 (£175,000) since the move.

Jessica Herring, who was a teaching assistant in 2020, now manages to rake in up to $12.00 (£9.6k) a month – despite never going to university.

It's not a get-rich-quick scheme. Hering works between eight and 12 hours a day

“I was in a predicament that I’m in here, in my 30s, and I don’t have a college diploma, I don’t have much work experience,” she told CNBC earlier this year.

“I thought how should I take care of my child?”

The 37-year-old decided to try offering graphic design packages on freelance work site Fiverr alongside her full-time job in 2019.

She started with small projects like images saying “Be right back” or “Offline” to be used while players were streamed live.

It was all a side issue until the longtime video game lover was fired from her teaching assistant job in September 2020.

But up until then, she’s been editing significantly more videos than she’s been working for the local school.

With the extra “free time,” Herring expanded her services and began creating intro videos for Twitch streamers and offering video editing for social media.

“I do the TikToks, those [Instagram] roll that [YouTube] shorts,” she added.

Her weekly breakdown comes down to “90% regular video edits,” she explained.

“And then I would say about 9% social trailers and maybe 1% Twitch channel trailers.”

The American now makes between $5,000 (£4,000) and around $12,000 (£9.6k) a month on the site, depending on the time of year.

As of 2019 and January this year, Herring has earned more than $215,000 (£175,000).

“I grew up in poverty,” she says.

“This is the first time in my life that I can buy something and not have to spend a budget on it. If I need anything or want to spoil my son, I can do that.”

But it’s not a get-rich-quick scheme. Herring does work.

The designer usually works seven days a week and between eight and twelve hours a day.

It’s worth it, she said. Because now she can take care of her child and do what she loves.
