“I don’t know, but I know he got into her”

Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks celebrated a historic comeback win in the national championship game Monday night.

Kansas, who were 16 points behind towards the end of the first half, were 15 points behind at halftime. But the Jayhawks beat the North Carolina Tar Heels 31-10 in the first 10 minutes of the second half and then pulled away in the final two minutes.

After halftime, Kansas seemed like a completely different team that had suddenly come alive.

Kansas (34-6) looked more motivated than ever as Self led the show to erase a disappointing first-half performance. Their defense held UNC (29-10) in the second half in an 11-for-40 shooting. In the 1:41 final, the Tar Heels failed to score and missed all four shots. Also, defense also generated offense when roaring back.

Former Kansas Jayhawks and NBA legend Paul Pierce was asked what he thought Self said about the team at halftime. He answered:

“I don’t know, but I do know that he got into them because they came out like their lives depended on it.”

It was an impressive comeback for the Kansas Jayhawks as they got past the Tar Heels 72-69.

After trailing 40-25 at halftime, the Jayhawks outplayed the Tar Heels 47-29 in the second half.

It was a picture-perfect ending for the Jayhawks, who put their stamp on an impressive season. For the Kansas coach, it was a particularly memorable win given the death of his father Bill Self Sr. in January.

With Monday night’s win, Self became one of 16 men’s basketball coaches to win multiple national titles. The first for the Hall of Famers was held in 2008. Kansas was considered the best team to compete in the 2020 tournament, but the event was canceled due to the pandemic.

Paul Pierce gave another resounding endorsement to Self, a Hall of Fame coach, by saying he is one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history:

“Bill Self has just put himself forward as one of the greatest coaches in Kansas history, but in college basketball history.”

After a disappointing first-half performance, the Jayhawks buckled and made an historic comeback. It was a fitting ending for Self and the Jayhawks as they put on a somber performance for the ages.
