Huntington Beach, Mater Dei and Newport Harbor play in Division 1 of the CIF-SS Girls Volleyball Playoffs – Orange County Register

Three Orange County teams were selected for Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 girls’ volleyball playoffs, which will be played in a pool play format for the first time.
Huntington Beach, Mater Dei and Newport Harbor play in the elite group. The pool games will take place on Wednesday 19th October, 25th October and 29th October.
Mater Dei is in Pool A with Lakewood, Mira Costa and Palos Verdes. Pool B has Huntington Beach, Marymount, Newport Harbor and Sierra Canyon.
Huntington Beach plays in Newport Harbor on the final day of pool play, October 29. The winners of Pool A and Pool B will play each other in the Division 1 Championship game on November 5th at Cerritos College.
Championship games in the other eight divisions will also be played on November 5 at locations yet to be determined.
Marymount defeated Mater Dei in last season’s Division 1 Championship game.
Mater Dei won the Trinity League championship that season. Newport Harbor took first place in the Surf League ahead of runner-up Huntington Beach.
Wild card round matches will be played in some divisions on Tuesday, October 18 to reduce the field of first round qualifiers to 32 teams. In Divisions 2-9, first round matches will be held on Thursday October 20th, followed by second round matches on Saturday October 22nd, quarterfinals on October 26th and semifinals on October 29th.
Santa Margarita, the No. 2 Trinity League team, is third in Division 2. South Coast League champion Aliso Niguel is runner-up in Division 2. Aliso Niguel has a first-round bye, as does the Pacific Coast League- Champion Beckman. Sea View League Champion El Toro and Empire League Champion Cypress.
El Toro was last season’s Division 3 champion.
Wave League champion Edison is fourth in Division 3.
Yorba Linda, who finished second to Foothill in the Crestview League, is fourth in Division 5.
Several Orange County teams did not finish high enough in their league standings to earn a guaranteed playoff spot, but were given spots at large. They are Los Alamitos and Orange Lutheran in Division 2; and El Dorado, El Modena and Marina in Division 5.
