Humza Yousaf is an inspiration to thousands of young Scots
Scotland has long had a reputation for being inclusive and I have seen progress in this area in my lifetime, but we should not underestimate the importance of Yousaf’s appointment to thousands of young Scots from similar backgrounds.
Yousaf has a migration background. His parents, Mian Muzaffar Yousaf Arain and mother Shaaista Bhutta, both emigrated to Scotland and their son was born in Glasgow.

The later First Minister studied politics at Glasgow University and was also a member of the Muslim Students Association, of which he became President.
Here he began to profile his profile at a young age and became a well-known member of the student council. These experiences further nurtured a passion for politics that first emerged in the school’s Modern Studies class.
Alongside his studies, he was involved with the charity Islamic Relief, where he served as a volunteer media spokesperson. He was also part of a community radio station providing food and care for asylum seekers and the homeless in Glasgow.
Here, at the university, Yousaf also joined the SNP.
He held a variety of positions within the party and was promoted for his ideas and talent.
In the past few days, we’ve heard that Yousaf “only worked in politics.” This was used as an insult, as if he had no “real world” experience.
