Houston crime: Rene Alfredo Alvarado Lopez, 22, has been charged in a hit-and-run accident that killed a 2-year-old on Nairns Street

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — A 22-year-old man is facing two charges after a 2-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run accident in southwest Houston on Saturday.

Rene Alfredo Alvarado Lopez is charged with involuntary manslaughter while drunk and failing to provide assistance.

Alvarado Lopez is scheduled to appear in a probable cause court on Monday.

The incident happened at around 4:25 p.m. Saturday at the 8400 block of Nairn Street, near Gessner Road.

Houston police said Alvarado Lopez was driving a green Dodge Ram pickup across a condominium parking lot when he struck a child running in the driveway.

He drove away after hitting the child, but witnesses followed him, police said. Witnesses eventually caught up with his vehicle outside the apartment complex and were able to hold him until officers arrived.

The 2-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alvarado Lopez was questioned by officers who determined he was intoxicated.

That fatal incident was one of two on Saturday involving a motor vehicle and the death of a young child.

A 6-year-old was struck and killed by a driver in a white SUV at around 6:19 p.m. at Block 9700 of Leawood on Elmcroft Drive, also in southwest Houston

The 52-year-old suspect in the second crash has been charged with first-degree murder and third DWI offenses. He is said to have run over the 6-year-old three times.
