Houston Astros pitchers Framber Valdez, Luis Garcia, Cristian Javier spotted by Oz Ocampo

Oz Ocampo is credited with finding international talent, especially pitchers, and signing him with the Houston Astros.

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (KTRK) — One man’s behind-the-scenes work takes center stage for the Astros this postseason.

“We’re thrilled to see success at the big league level,” admitted Oz Ocampo in an interview with ABC13.

For nearly a decade, Ocampo served as the Astros’ international crosschecker, which plays a key role in the team’s scouting department. Ocampo was instrumental in finding and signing pitchers Luis Garcia, Jose Urquidy, Bryan Abreu, World Series Game 2 winner Framber Valdez and World Series Game 4 starter Christian Javier.

“We see these players aged 18, 19, 20 and 21,” he recalled. “And we’re trying to figure out what they’re going to do at age 25, 26, 27.”

And part of that puzzle is the mental side of the game, the belief that these players will be able to perform on baseball’s biggest stage, and that these players — along with their families — will trust the Astros to lead them to success .

“It says a lot about the culture that was created, and Oz was a big part of that,” Astros general manager James Click told ABC13. “As head of this department, Oz creates this culture so that these people can go out and do their jobs.”

Ocampo, who speaks multiple languages, admits he remembers the players he missed more than big hits like Framber and Javier, but he still remembers those early days.

“Knowing that first moment and then seeing the change over the years,” Oz recalls. “From Framber showing that big league curveball at Domincan at age 21, to a guy like Bryan Abreu . He was skinny as rails and threw 84 to 86 (mph).”

Abreu was now throwing 84-86 mph to 97 mph. And Ocampo can relate to that acceleration. Like a high-speed fastball, Ocampo rockets up the ranks. He is leaving the Astros to join the Miami Marlins as the team’s assistant general manager.
