Hours of delay and cancellations occur at Scottish airports

In its latest update, NATS stated: “The flight planning issue impacted the system’s ability to process flight plans automatically, which meant that flight plans had to be processed manually, which is not possible at the same volume, thus necessitating traffic flow restrictions.”

“Our priority is always to ensure every UK flight remains safe and we sincerely regret the disruption this has caused.”

The NATS center in Prestwick is responsible for air traffic control for Northern England, Scotland and the North East Atlantic.

Issues can have a huge impact on passengers. In October 2015, Scotland experienced passenger delays when Nats reported interference on radio frequencies used to communicate with aircraft.

UK Transport Secretary Mark Harper said ministers would continue to work with NATS to “support them in managing impacted flights and assisting passengers”.

In its recent statement on Twitter, Edinburgh Airport stated: “Although the technical issue has been resolved, disruptions to flight schedules persist.”

“Passengers should continue to check with their airline for flight information before coming to the airport.”
