Homes near Homestead High School were vandalized

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WANE) — Neighbors in a southwestern neighborhood near Homestead High School woke up Monday morning to graffiti on their garage doors.

Police say around 1 a.m. home video shows what appears to be a teenager wearing a white hoodie spray-painting the garage door of an apartment building in The Homesteads Addition and then running away.

Three other homes have had their garage doors spray painted, all green paint.

WANE 15 spoke to neighbors about exactly what happened and they tell us this is a very close-knit and diverse neighborhood and they never expected anything like this to ever happen.

A neighbor says she’s lived in the neighborhood for 18 years with no prior problems, until a recent post about a Homestead High School student in blackface went viral.

No link has been confirmed between the vandalism and recent racial tensions in the community.

Two homeowners whose homes were destroyed were minorities, and both happened to have surveillance cameras. One of the homeowners said that none of the other homes have or need to have cameras, and she believes that is incorrect.

“I shouldn’t have to buy a security camera just to feel safe in my own neighborhood. Everyone here knows each other and is like family. It is sad that something like this happened to us.”
