FridgeCam, from consumer brand Smarter, takes a picture when you close your fridge door and sends it to your iPhone or Android phone.

With the best-before date tracker, users can reduce food waste by having the camera keep track of the expiry date for them.

The gadget then reminds you in time to use certain products.

FridgeCam automatically adds used or expired items to your shopping cart, which is then pre-populated the next time you shop online.

The food tracking camera is suitable for all fridges and is currently available from Amazon for £12.99.

The device can fetch upwards of £80.00 at other retailers.

The product can be retrofitted to any refrigerator using the bracket supplied.

All users need to set up is WiFi access and a compatible iOS or Android device.

One satisfied customer said: “As someone who does a lot of on call duty, I find this camera really useful. You always know what’s in the fridge and can easily check it wherever you are.

“It’s probably not for everyone, and if you’re expecting something wonderful, it’s not, it won’t make the salad for you!

“However, it’s a great way to keep track of what’s in your fridge and helps prevent food waste or over-buying.”

Others have suggested that it is important to charge the webcam for at least six hours via the provided USB port before attaching it to ensure everything is working smoothly.

According to the reviews, it’s also important to have a strong Wi-Fi network as weak signals might not be able to penetrate the metal fridge enough for the device to work.
