It was high time to bring a little cheer to the Hallmark Channel’s holiday season, and this December, millennials’ favorite coastal trad network will finally make its debut first same-sex christmas love story, The Christmas sitter. (Featuring Ohio’s own Jonathan Bennett, aka Aaron Samuels!) An unintended gift of this project is that all future programming will be now completely empty Hallmark’s self-proclaimed Queen of Christmas, Candace Cameron Bure, who has moved to rival network Great American Family in the Big Schism of 2022.

Our most disliked sister in Christ was recently revealed to the Wall Street Journal that she left the network because it was becoming difficult to rejoice in what Hallmark is beginning to offer under its tree — in short: queer narratives. “My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth,” Bure said. “I knew the people behind Great American Family were Christians who loved the Lord and wanted to promote faith programs and good family entertainment.”

Enter Hilarie Burton, another Hallmark alumna who had some thoughts on DJ Tanner’s transition to the Great American Family: “Bigot. I don’t remember Jesus liking hypocrites like Candy. Why, surely. Make your money honey,” Burton tweeted. “You ride this wave of prejudice to the bank.”

Burton also responded directly to another part of Bure’s interview, which asked her if Great American Family — helmed by former Hallmark parent company executive Bill Abbott — would ever feature same-sex love stories. Apparently, she said no: “I think the Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at its core.”

“Now they just openly admit their bigotry,” Burton tweeted. “I hung up on that shit years ago when Abbott was at Hallmark. Good thing they dropped him. Being LGBTQ is not a “trend”. This guy and his network are disgusting. You too, candy. There is nothing untraditional about same-sex couples.”

The timing of Abbott’s exit from Hallmark, noted by WSJcame shortly after the network refused to air an advertisement for a wedding planning website where two brides kissed in late 2019. It later rejected the decision afterwards #boycottbrand started trending on Twitter. Prompting Bure’s departure as a result of new management, she said, “It’s basically a very different network than when I started because of the leadership change.” Ah yes, because Hallmark is now the channel of choice for blue-haired, heartbreaking Satan-worshipping libraries , in contrast to step in his step like Bure did on Halloween.

According to the profile, Abbott and Bure simply share a rich history and a certain dedication to “soft faith” programming, which is likely why the latter earned the title of “Chief Creative Officer” and her own “Candace Cameron Presents” banner at the network. If this all sounds lame, just wait until you hear about their first Great American Family Christmas movie: A Christmas present tells the story of Maggie, an ambitious real estate agent who has “caught a bumpy road” in her marriage and has fallen from her faith. Spoiler alert: she’ll find her way back. “One of God’s greatest gifts, and it doesn’t need to be wrapped,” says one character of Christianity. Lots of sense! Such purpose! The deepest of all depths!

Especially at the time of WSJ In the interview, Bure filmed a scene in which her character rushes to a church to deliver a cake and experiences “an epiphany.” Here’s a scintillating behind-the-scenes look:

The crew wrestles with what they call the “God Light,” or the flickering ray that comes during Mrs. Bure’s spiritual interlude. A crew member protests when the light gets too bright too quickly. “It’s a bit of a hallelujah,” he says. A producer is repairing the heavy church door, the shrill banging of which repeatedly destroys the atmosphere. A crew member inhales a snow blister and coughs.

So far, Burton has been the only Hallmark star to open up about Bure’s newfound allegiance to the Great American Family (and its thinly veiled bigotry), but honestly, I’d love to hear what Jodie Sweetin must say since it is more than filled the void she Full house big sister left behind.

All the best to Bure in her new venture. I’m sure she will be a lot of more compelling as a cake-carrying, Jesus-loving housewife than a New York journalist who leaves her wasp fiancé for a cynical bar manager.
