A premature leg injury wasn’t enough to stop SZA from attending the 2022 Grammy Awards on Sunday night (April 3) and lifting some hardware.
The US singer-songwriter hobbled at the gala, which she attended on crutches. It’s just a good thing she made the effort, because she was called onstage to receive the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her collaboration with Doja Cat, “Kiss Me More.”
In one of the lighter moments of the night, SZA visited the podium on crutches to collect her award, with Lady Gaga at her side to make sure the whole world couldn’t see a catastrophe.
Backstage from the Grammys’ media room, SZA explained the cause of her injury.
“It’s very funny because I fell out of bed just before it was time to go and get ready,” she said. “Like the day before, but that’s the way it works. Everything great in my life has always been very random, but it just adds to the energy.”
She carried that energy and hinted at more music in the pipeline. A moment earlier, she announced that her next album would be ready soon. “It’s probably my unisex project to date, if that makes sense. It’s for everyone,” she explained.
Time will tell if another track featuring Doja Cat is among these new creations. If not, it’s not because of a lack of mutual respect. “She’s a star,” SZA gushed about her collaborator, “I think she’s so masterful…I could just learn from her.”
“Kiss Me More” peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Official UK Singles Chart and topped several polls including Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart, and the pair performed the hit live at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.
SZA’s last full-length studio album was released in 2017 cltrwhich reached #3 on the Billboard 200 all-genre chart.
