Hogwarts Legacy broke records on Twitch, a gaming giant, after becoming the most-streamed single-player game ever on the platform.

This despite an aggressive cancellation campaign by liberal activists who called for the game to be boycotted because of its ties to JK Rowling. The Harry Potter creator has been labeled “transphobic” after arguing that “erasing the concept of sex” in 2020 is also “erasing the lived reality of women worldwide.”

Activists made several attempts to cancel the game ahead of its launch on Friday, even designing a website to track and highlight streamers playing Hogwarts Legacy.

But even that couldn’t stop the game, which received critical acclaim from IGN and other gaming critics, from rising to the top on Twitch.

“It was never about trans rights or promoting a good cause,” the streamer added. “They just want to ruin this thing for you.”

Some Reddit users shared spoilsport screenshots in the days leading up to its launch to dent its popularity across the internet.

The media also did their part in branding the game as racist and transphobic, according to El American editor-in-chief Ben Kew.

“The mainstream media continues to reinforce false narratives about the new Harry Potter Hogwarts Legacy video game,” Kew wrote.

Kew shared an article from Fortune magazine with the caption: “The Harry Potter game has been branded a ‘genocide simulator.'”

A video that went viral on TikTok and racked up over two million views poked fun at the controversy.

“Most of the time it means nothing to the people who get Hogwarts Legacy except [that] they like Harry Potter.”

He continued, “Now I hear people are bullying innocent streamers just for playing this game?”

“You’ve become what you hate: a monster.”
