Greg Raths concedes Mission Viejo’s seat on the Orange County Register to Cynthia Vasquez

After several days of ballot updates showing a close race for the Mission Viejo City Council seat in District 3, incumbent Greg Raths conceded victory to newcomer Cynthia Vasquez Monday night.

“Although I was the leader in my Mission Viejo City Council race on election night, it now appears as more votes are counted that I will not be re-elected to a third term to serve Mission Viejo,” Raths said in a post his social media page of the campaign.

In a vote count update on Monday, November 14, Vasquez led Raths by nearly 200 votes. Standing behind them was Ed Sachs, another former Council member.

Last week, Raths, Sachs and Wendy Bucknum – all elected to the council in 2018 – were impeached following a decision by the California Court of Appeals. A lawsuit filed against them earlier this year questioned whether they illegally extended their term in 2020 while the city was trying to implement a new voting system in Mission Viejo.

An Orange County Superior Court judge ruled in August that the three members’ terms of office ended in December 2020 and ordered them removed from their seats, but an appeals court had delayed that measure until last week.

The judge’s ruling had not prevented them from running for office again, and all three were on the vote last week.

Bucknum, who is running for the District 5 council seat, continues to hold a steady lead over her challenger, Jon Miller.
