Grant aims to make Fort Wayne homes more accessible

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WANE) – Qualified homeowners in Fort Wayne will soon be able to apply for a grant to make their homes more accessible.
Applications for the city’s residential building accessibility change program will open Tuesday. The program aims to provide features that make it easier for people with disabilities to move around the home.
Qualifications include:
- The applicant is the owner of the dwelling, which is also the applicant’s main residence
- Someone in the household has a permanent disability
- The house is within the city limits of Fort Wayne
- Household income is at or below 80 percent of the area median income.
Residents are encouraged to access the program guidelines and submit their application online through the city’s Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services. Residents who do not have access to the online application portal can call 260-427-8585 to obtain a paper copy.
The department noted that there may be delays in the construction process due to labor and supply chain shortages.
Funding for the program comes from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and is limited. Applications will be reviewed on a first-complete, first-process basis.
