Glioblastoma brain tumor: Houston Methodist doctors use magnetotherapy to target cancer cells

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — In the heart of Texas Medical Center, within the Houston Methodist, Dr. David Baskin and his team came up with a theory after observing how cancer cells behave compared to our normal cells. They asked the question: is it possible that magnetic energy can be used to kill cancer cells?

“I’ve been researching glioblastoma for years and trying a lot of different things,” Baskin said. “When this idea came up, I needed expertise.”

At that time dr. Santosh Helekar was involved in research into magnetic therapy to stimulate the brain, and when Baskin pitched the idea to him, Helekar quickly shifted his research and joined the team.

“We started collaborating and doing cell and culture experiments,” said Helekar.

“The shocking part was that it worked so well because so many research projects seem like good ideas, but then they don’t work. This one actually works,” Baskin said.

They went from the research bench to the “oncomagnetic” helmet. It’s a word they invented for a device that seems to show promise.

“You just put it on your head. That’s it,” Baskin explained. “It works through your hair.”

The device is very convenient, and the best part is that it is portable, which means patients can take it home, switch it on, and have a treatment from the comfort of their own home.

Are medical miracles performed in Houston just by wearing a helmet? That seems to be happening. Eyewitness News at 10pm gets the lowdown on the new device and how it could serve as an effective alternative to chemotherapy.
