Girl in Nebraska takes her grandpa to the daddy-daughter dance: ‘They had a great time’

A five-year-old girl named Austyn Woolverton and her grandpa Steve Guenther recently attended a father-daughter dance in Papillion, Nebraska after the couple touched the hearts of millions on social media.

On February 8th, the day of “daddy-daughter date night,” Austyn woke up and said, “The dance is tonight! It’s dance day!” Austyn’s mother, Kelsey Woolverton, told Fox News Digital.

Woolverton said she styled Austyn’s hair for the event, which has been highly anticipated since Austyn and her grandpa went viral on TikTok last month.

Back then, Woolverton shared footage of the sweet moment when Austyn asked Guenther to join her for the father-daughter Valentine’s Day event. The TikTok video has been viewed more than two million times (SEE THE VIDEO at the top of this article).

TikTok users have apparently reached out to Woolverton for an update on the dance, which took place on February 8th.

In the original viral video, Austyn can be heard saying to her grandfather in a very low voice, “There’s a Valentine’s Day dance. But we have to let our father go.”

Austyn had decided to invite Guenther to the father-daughter event since her own father, Michael “Mike” Woolverton, had died of a drug overdose with fentanyl, Woolverton said. Austin was just 18 months old.

“She really has no memory of him, but we’ve talked about him from the beginning,” Woolverton told Fox News Digital last week.

Woolverton said that as the dance approached, she wanted Austyn to settle down without being reminded that her father couldn’t be there.

“In a special moment like this, I don’t want to take away from her little happiness,” Woolverton shared.

“My intention when posting was never to highlight dad-daughter dances,” Woolverton said of her TikTok video, which has gone viral. “I think inclusion is so hard because how far do you go without taking it away from people who have dads?”

Woolverton said that following Austyn’s father’s death, the dance was an opportunity for Austyn to find other ways to feel included.

“There is no reason [kids] gotta do without things like that just because it’s called a ‘father-daughter dance,'” commented Woolverton.

“It’s a brave thing … It’s not always the easiest,” she added.

Regarding the event, Woolverton said Austyn and her grandpa were full of smiles.
