Before the premiere of the second season of the CBS sitcom ghosts, many wondered if a character would gain the ability to see the ghosts of Woodstone Mansion alongside protagonist Sam (Rose McIver). Now the showrunners of the series are revealing the reasoning behind their final decision.

In the Season 1 finale, Sam’s husband plays Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) fell through the ground and hit his head. Since Sam gained her abilities in a similar way, viewers wondered if Jay would then gain the power of the specter sight. That is, until last night, when it was confirmed to the audience that Sam remains the only person capable of seeing the multitude of ghosts in their rural home.

“It just felt like it was going to be too groundbreaking a development,” says co-showrunner Joe Wiseman TVLine. “We’re only 18 episodes into the first season and it seems like it’s Sam’s business and it’s his business that he kind of has to come to terms with being this guy who isn’t privy to what’s going on . We just don’t want to blow that up just yet.”

For co-showrunner Joe Port, giving Jay the opportunity to see the ghosts alongside Sam felt too predictable of them. Not to mention it would lessen the importance of Sam’s power.

“I know we’re a TV show, but it seems like a very TV-ish direction I think,” Port explains. “I don’t mind the head forge along those lines, but it seems like Sam’s power is very rare. It doesn’t seem like this should be something that happens to so many people who bump their heads. So I just thought it would be too much that it would happen to two people in the same household.”
