Galaxy defender Julian Araujo’s move to Barcelona is official

Julian Araujo’s move to FC Barcelona is finally official.

By the end of the January transfer window, the Galaxy and Barcelona had reached an agreement on the move, but reportedly Barcelona were about 20 seconds late in finalizing the deal with FIFA and sent the move to an appeal.

Araujo, who was training with the Galaxy up until the transfer deadline, quit when the move was attempted to be sorted out. On Thursday, Araujo and his agents flew to Barcelona to finalize the deal.

The Galaxy will receive a reported amount of $4m for the transfer and will “retain a percentage of the sale of the transfer if Araujo is sold to another club”. The deal runs until 2026.

“It’s a wonderful story of a young Southern Californian who came to LA Galaxy Academy with a dream of playing for the LA Galaxy, and he did it through the process of being in the academy, being on the second team and making his move to make the first team,” said Galaxy coach Greg Vanney. “He has now played three years in the first team, almost 8,000 minutes and he has been recognized for his growth and efforts.

“He will join one of the biggest clubs in the world, which is exciting for him and his story in many ways.”

Araujo, who signed with Galaxy as a 17-year-old, burst into the first-team lineup in 2019 and became one of the best right-backs in Major League Soccer. He originally joined Galaxy Academy in 2018 from Barca Residency Academy.

During his time at Galaxy, Araujo played 100 regular season games (89 starts) and was a two-time MLS All-Star. Last season he registered nine assists in a total of 39 appearances. Galaxy defender Julian Araujo’s move to Barcelona is official
