A man and a teenager were arrested on Thursday, October 6, as suspects in an August shooting in La Habra that killed a teenager, authorities said.
Joseph Derek Ornelas, 23, of Fullerton is accused of killing the youth in a shooting just before 3 p.m. Aug. 19 on Pacific Avenue between Liberty and Euclid streets, La Habra police said. According to police, it was apparently a gang-related murder.
Ornelas faces charges of murder, participation in gang activity and possession of weapons in a school area, police said. The school area was Las Lomas Elementary, according to the criminal complaint.
A male juvenile suspect was also arrested in connection with the shooting but was not named due to his age. He was being held without bail at Orange County Juvenile Hall, police said.
Ornelas was being held at Theo Lacy Facility on $1 million bail, according to prison records.
The teenage victim’s name was not released.
