Front row at Fort Wayne International Airport to reopen on November 21st

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WANE) – In 15 days, the main gate, where pickups and drop-offs take place at Fort Wayne International Airport, will reopen.

Executive Director of Airports Scott Hinderman told WANE 15 the road has just been repaved and is scheduled to reopen on November 21.

The repaving is part of the larger, two-year construction phase that is taking place at FWA.

Hinderman said things have slowed down a bit trying to source materials for the project, but it’s still scheduled for completion in March 2023.

The reopening of the front row is good news for many, including Hinderman, who told WANE 15 that even he was a bit impatient with the ongoing construction.

“Now if you don’t come here often, I’ll admit that picking up and dropping off at the terminal is counterintuitive,” he said. “We tried to sign the area heavily. In fact, I think we had too many signs at one point. So we tried to moderate the signage a bit so that if you slow down and read all the signs, you can get through our construction site environment fairly easily.”

That will soon change and for the winter months things may get back to normal in at least one respect.

Hinderman added that parts of the construction that are already done look great and everything is going well.

He believes the airport will be truly first class once all the construction work is complete.

“The areas that are finished look absolutely gorgeous. I’m proud of it, residents of Northeast Indiana should be proud of it, and it’s a great first impression for those visiting our area,” said Hinderman.

Once the current phase of construction is complete, another phase of construction will begin at Fort Wayne Airport.

The design is complete and the construction documents are now being finalized for the next phase of work.

Hinderman said the process will begin in the spring, when the current phase is complete, then another year and a half to two years of work will be done at the airport.

Until the bids open, they won’t know the exact duration of the project, Hinderman said.

After everything is ready, Hinderman has been looking forward to a modern and good-looking airport for many years.

You can find out more about the construction project on the FWA website. Hinderman said they are also happy to offer tours for those interested in seeing the completed work. Front row at Fort Wayne International Airport to reopen on November 21st
